Just when you thought the order of applying your skincare doesn’t matter– it does! Skincare products are formulated in its own distinctive way and when applied incorrectly, you can prevent your skin from receiving its full benefits. Furthermore, you can also be wasting good quality product. Although you may think you have the best skincare products in the world, you might have it completely wrong if you’re not applying them in this correct order.
Layer Your Skincare Products Like a Pro
1. Makeup Remover
Completely removing your makeup before you start your skincare is absolutely crucial. By fully taking off your makeup allows your skin to properly absorb your skincare products. Be sure to thoroughly take off everything from your eye-makeup to any lip product you may have on.
2. Cleanser
Take the suggested amount of cleanser onto the tips of your fingers and cleanse away! This step is very important, as it removes any remaining makeup, dirt, and bacteria from the skin. Be sure you’re using a cleanser that works best for your skin type!
3. Exfoliant
Depending on how much you choose to exfoliate a week, exfoliation comes right after cleansing. Exfoliation products may have special instructions, so be sure to follow directions accordingly. Don’t forget to rinse and pat dry.
4. Toner/Essence
If your skincare routine calls for toner or an essence, it’s best applied right after rinsing because it prepares your skin to absorbs whatever products follow the best.
5. Eye-Cream
Give your eyes the love it needs with an eye cream. Because the eye-area is such a delicate area, eye-creams are formulated a bit differently than face creams and serums. Take a small amount of eye cream on the tip of your finger and gently pat the product under your eyes instead of swiping. This application technique allows the eye-cream to absorb better without being too harsh on the eyes.
6. Serum/Treatment Products
Serums and treatments products like retinoids/retinoids are next in line. Usually, these products are designed to cater to any specific skin issue because of their high potency. If you have acne, this is when you apply your spot treatments.
7. Face Oil
If you have a favorite face oil, now is the time to use it! Face oils work wonders for dry skin and work best when applied before bed. Allow your face oil to penetrate better by patting it onto the skin. Don’t forget your neck and decollete!
8. Moisturizer
Now, you can lock everything in with a moisturizer. This should be the heaviest product you apply on your skin which is why it’s saved for last. Moisturizers are absolutely vital to any skincare routine.
9. Sunscreen
If you’re starting a new day and not going to bed, don’t forget your sunscreen. Delay the signs of aging and hyperpigmentation by applying your sunscreen before stepping out into the day, especially if you’ll be in direct sunlight.
