The Benefits of Retinoids for Your Skin

the benefits of retinoids for your skin

You may be familiar with popular, over-the-counter drugs that contain retinoids, like the well know Retinol, but are you really that familiar with retinoids? Retinoids are incredibly popular and used in a variety of skincare products, and rightly so! At Clartici, we believe in using only the highest quality ingredients in our skincare lines, and that includes retinoids. But what exactly are the benefits of retinoids for your skin?

1. What are the benefits of retinoids?

Retinoids are important in the treatment of acne, and it has been used for acne treatment since the 70s. Additionally, retinoids have been used to treat the appearance of the signs of aging like wrinkles, fine lines, and sunspots. Retinoids have also been used in the treatment of pigmentation issues where it is needed to bring in more color to the skin. Furthermore, retinoids aide in the ability of the skin cells to turn over, meaning that your skin looks younger and healthier.

2. What are retinoids?

Before we can get into the benefits of retinoids for your skin, first we need to understand what retinoids are. Retinoids are essentially just vitamin A based topical creams and drugs that can be bought over the counter. Retinoids can also be prescribed by doctors in higher strengths.

4. Where are retinoids found?

Retinoids are also commonly known as Vitamin A1, which makes finding where they can be found easier. Vitamin A1 can be found in high quantities in foods like liver (beef liver, lamb liver, liver sausage, etc.). That being said, it’s also found in more appetizing foods like salmon and other fish! Eggs, broccoli, and tomatoes are also great sources for retinoids.

Over the counter, you can find retinoids like tretinoin, tazarotene, and adapalene in gels, topicals, and concentrated oils.

5. How do retinoids work?

Retinoids are known to help in the treatment of acne, wrinkles, actinic keratosis spots, uneven pigmentation, and skin cell turnover. They are able to do all of this by promoting an increase in collagen levels in the skin as well as promoting the growth of blood vessels which in turn bring more oxygen and red and white blood cells to the skin which rejuvenates it.

6. What are the side effects of retinoids?

While there are plenty of health and skincare benefits to be had from the use of retinoids in over the counter drugs and topical creams, there are also a few side effects to be aware of. First, it should be noted that in order to see the most benefits of using retinoids, you should use it for about a year. This means that it will be on your face a lot!

Retinoids can cause the skin to become very dry if worn too long or too much. Additionally, retinoids can cause the skin to become very irritated and more sensitive than normal. Because of this, it is recommended that you wear sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher. Finally, it is best if you use retinoids only every other day to decrease the likelihood of dry, irritated skin.
