The Worst Foods for Your Skin

The Worst Foods for Your Skin

The pursuit of flawless skin is endless! Between the weather, our diet, how much sleep we get, our natural complexion, and so much more— the factors that affect our skin are endless as well! Short of using the Clartici app to monitor your skin’s every need, what can we do to make sure that we have clear and radiating skin every day? Well, for starters, monitoring what you put in your body is a starting point. While you should always focus on the nutritional value of food, there are some foods that are naturally worse for your skin than others. Here are the worst foods for your skin that you should approach with caution!

Salt – Sodium

Have you ever woken up with swollen and puffy skin? It’s usually all thanks to the excess water that you retained overnight. When you consume a lot of sodium either through salt or household condiments like soy sauce, you are more likely to swell and puff up. This is because the sodium in your body retains water more than anything else!

If you want to have glowing, smooth skin then it’s probably best to take it easy with salty snacks and seasonings.

Shellfish – Iodine

Did you know while only about 2% of the population is allergic to shellfish, they are so rich in iodine that they can cause skin issues in just about every one of us? Food that is high in iodine is a contributing factor to acne in both teens and adults. Iodine is very concentrated in shellfish and other ocean life, so if you are a big fan of crab, lobster, and shrimp you will want to keep an eye out for iodine.

Milk – Lactose

As someone who used to love washing down my sweet bread with a cold glass of milk, the lactose in milk is one of the biggest contributors to acne and imperfect skin. Milk contains a high level of bioavailable hormones that are not easily absorbed. As a result, the glands in your body can be overstimulated and result in blemishes. This can easily be one of the worst foods for your skin.

Luckily, thanks to the growing popularity of alternative “milks,” you can find a wide variety of delicious alternatives. Almond Milk, Oat Milk, and Soy Milk are popular and nutritious alternatives to cow milk.

High-Glycemic Starches

We love carbs! But sometimes, too much of a good thing can cause issues with your body and as a result your skin. High-Glycemic starches that can be found in pasta and bread also cause acne. It’s best to approach these foods in moderation.

Finally, if you enjoy your wines and spirits, you may be battling the final boss for perfect skin. Alcohol causes 2 issues. First, alcohol is high in sugar, especially if it is accompanied with a soda or juice. This sugar can cause acne and blemishes as well. Furthermore, alcohol dehydrates you which removes water from your body and from your skin.

Avoid the sugar and keep yourself hydrated!
